Jochen’s Farewell: Celebrating 12 Years at the ASSIST Community Social

We recently hosted our ASSIST Community Social, a joyful gathering where we came together to celebrate the power of connection and welcome of our ASSIST community. The evening was a beautiful blend of jubilation and reflection, filled with laughter, delicious food, moving poetry, mesmerising music, and even a touch of magic.

This memorable event was made even more special by the warmth and support of our community. A thank you to City of Sanctuary Sheffield for graciously hosting, our incredible volunteers and staff for their dedication, Bevan for serving up delicious food, and the talented performers whose artistry brought the celebration to life. It was a night of togetherness, marking the beginning of something new, while also honoring the work and legacy of those who have helped shape our community.

Jochen’s Heartfelt Goodbye

As we gathered to celebrate, one of the evening’s most poignant moments was saying goodbye to Jochen, our Accommodation Manager of 12 years. His departure marks the end of an era for our organisation, but his legacy will continue to resonate for years to come.

Anna, our Director, captured the essence of Jochen’s impact:

"His work has left a mark not only on our organisation but on the fabric of this city. The ASSIST houses acquired under his leadership are more than buildings. They are symbols of Sheffield’s solidarity, testaments to Jochen’s dedication, and tributes to 12 years of compassion-driven work."

Jochen’s efforts went far beyond acquiring housing—he strengthened community ties, built trust, and exemplified the values that are at the heart of ASSIST’s mission. In his words, Jochen shared his deep gratitude for the celebration:

“Huge thanks to everyone who came to the ASSIST community celebration on Monday—and for all the lovely cards, gifts, kind words, and the amazing scrapbook. I felt incredibly appreciated, slightly emotional, and only mildly overwhelmed! It really meant a lot. After exactly 12 years at ASSIST, it’s a strange feeling to be stepping away—but it feels like the right time, and I’m leaving knowing the organisation is in brilliant hands with such a dedicated team and of course the support of many amazing volunteers.”

We join Anna in saying to Jochen:

"You’ve made such a difference here — not just through the homes you’ve helped create, but in the way you’ve strengthened community, built trust, and stayed grounded in your values. That kind of work doesn’t end when a job does — it carries on in the culture of ASSIST. So thank you — and good luck with whatever comes next!"

Kyle’s Arrival: A New Chapter

As we bid farewell to Jochen, we are excited to welcome Kyle France as our new Housing Manager. With a decade of experience in the Modern Slavery sector, Kyle brings a wealth of expertise in supporting vulnerable individuals and a deep commitment to making a difference in the lives of those in need.

Kyle shared his enthusiasm about joining the team:

"ASSIST does some incredible work, supporting people in our local community who need it most. I am super excited to join the team and do my part."

Welcome Kyle! We’re excited about the future and the fresh perspectives you bring to our team.

Looking Ahead: Thank You

Our housing services thrive thanks to the generosity of landlords, hosts, volunteer house visitors, and house managers. We are grateful to its three volunteer teams: the Volunteer Hosts, offering safe spaces in their households; the Hosting Support Group, which maintains relationships with hosts and recruits new ones; and the Housing Group, which ensures that individuals in shared housing are well supported and that homes are well maintained.

Thank you to our accommodation team for your continued dedication and support—your contributions are essential to our success.

Lastly, to Jochen, thank you for everything—you’ve shaped this organisation in ways that words can’t capture. Your legacy will live on in the homes, the relationships, and the values you’ve instilled within the ASSIST community.
