Invite us to talk to your group, school or organisation

31 Jul 2012 Would you like members of your community group, organisation, church or school to hear first-hand from an asylum seeker about the dangers and challenges they have faced to seek refugee status in Sheffield? We have volunteers who are themselves asylum seekers and who are experienced speakers, willing to talk to community groups and school classes. Working in partnership with City of Sanctuary, we are keen to talk to as many people as possible in the Sheffield area.

Landmark ruling by Supreme Court

29 Jul 2012 On 25th July, the Supreme Court passed judgment in the case of RT and others, ruling that asylum seekers cannot be expected to lie to gain safety in their own countries, whether they are lying about beliefs they actually hold or beliefs they don’t hold.

Jimmy Mubenga's death: no prosecution

20 Jul 2012 The Crown Prosecution Service has announced that three private security guards employed by G4S would not be prosecuted over the death of Jimmy Mubenga. Jimmy was an Angolan asylum seeker who died in October 2010 after being restrained during a deportation attempt. To read more, go to The Guardian

A wedding with a difference

19 Jul 2012 Jonathan Saha and Rachel Johnson will be celebrating their wedding on 22 Sept…and they have asked their friends to give a donation to ASSIST instead of buying them a wedding present. “They say it’s better to give than to receive. In this case we won’t be doing either – but you can!

Thank you for coming to World Over!

5 Jul 2012 Thank you to everyone who gave their time to come to, and perform at the 6th annual ASSIST World Over Concert! A fantastic crowd of over three hundred people attended and were treated to a wonderful evening of music, dance and performance from around the world! Son de America started the evening so beautifully with their dancing inspired by the rhythms of Mexico. Son Para Todos then continued the Latin American theme with their salsa set.

Lemlem released

26 Jun 2012 The outcome of the meeting between Paul Blomfield MP and the Bishop of Sheffield with the Home Office Minister, was that Lemlem was released without conditions while the Home Office considers her case for discretionary leave to stay in UK. She is now back in Sheffield.

Lemlem due to be deported on Sunday 25 June

21 Jun 2012 Lemlem went to sign this week and was taken into detention. UKBA have booked a flight for THIS Sunday so we have very little time. Please pass on the news to anyone who may want to help or knows Lemlem.

Sheffield Half Marathon 2012
