ASSIST Sheffield

Challenging asylum destitution

Thank you for coming to World Over!

Thank you to everyone who gave their time to come to, and perform at the 6th annual ASSIST World Over Concert! A fantastic crowd of over three hundred people attended and were treated to a wonderful evening of music, dance and performance from around the world! Son de America started the evening so beautifully with their dancing inspired by the rhythms of Mexico. Son Para Todos then continued the Latin American theme with their salsa set. Side by Side provided an interesting contrast with their drama performance promoting intercultural understanding, cohesion and integration. After the interval, we travelled to the other side of the world and the Karen Women’s group treated us to traditional Karen dancing. The fabulous costumes and graceful dance was a real highlight of the concert. K.O.G. then had everyone on their feet dancing to his reggae and afro-beat songs. What an electrifying performance! For the second year running Rafiki Jazz ended the concert, wowing us with their contemporary world music.

Thank you for coming to the concert! It was lovely to see so many people there and to have the chance to talk to many of you during the afternoon events. ASSIST could not function without the support and generosity of the people of Sheffield.

We are also very very grateful to the many volunteers and organisations who made the event possible. We thank the University of Sheffield, in particular, the Pro Vice-Chancellor’s Office, and Matt Cheeseman for their energy and support throughout the project. We are also indebted to Sheffield Student’s Union, and Art on the Run for their help with the planning of the concert and logistics on the day.

Hope to see you at World Over 2013! We had better get planning…
